In this sculpture from the Civil War series, the soldier reminds us of the South itself at this critical stage of the war.  The status of Richmond as the arsenal of the South is evidenced by the cannon balls at his feet.  He is old like the South, an exhausted old feudal society about to be extinguished, but he will continue to do his duty as required.  Like his homeland, he is weary but still standing and ready to continue the fight.
